Sharing is caring
A few years ago I met with a clinician who came up with a signature program for working with couples.
The program was showing successful outcomes, but the challenge was that nobody knew about it. The therapist was wary of promoting it, fearing that other providers might replicate it.
While it's understandable that we would feel protective of our own creations and would want to keep them close to the chest, it's also important to recognize that replicating someone's method or "stealing" an idea takes a lot of hard work.
People would rather join in to promote your creation or service and be part of your work than take the time to figure it out.
As an example, my recent post on LinkedIn in which I list the best podcasts for therapists gathered over 3,000 views and added new subscribers to my newsletter. A win-win for all.
I shared someone else's hard work and added value to my own.
If those wonderful podcasters were cautious about sharing their point of view, they wouldn't have such a big listener base and a strong business.
How to build a business as an expert
It's a hard truth to admit when you spend a lot of time and money on acquiring skills and education, that your capabilities alone won't help you stand out. People are looking to work with someone they could connect with. David C. Baker breaks it down about positioning yourself as an expert. If you don't have much time to watch it all, watch from minute 19:06 of the video.
The Metaverse for you
Virtual reality is expected to become a big part of healthcare. An overlap of real and virtual worlds, the Metaverse connects multiple virtual domains.
For mental health, it means access to virtual support groups and therapy sessions. It will also lower the barrier to accessing help for those who cannot otherwise afford in-person care.
TikTok is not ok
After different studies, including one from a non-profit organization claiming that TikTok pushes videos of harmful content related to suicide and eating disorders to teenagers, Seattle's public schools are suing several social media companies.
Experts are worried about TikTok's role in the youth's mental health crisis.
In recent months the Chinese social media company has been facing scrutiny and growing pressure from state and federal lawmakers. Among the issues is the impact the app has on younger users.
They are farmers...
The Texas agriculture department wants to allocate $500,000 to reduce the suicide rate among farmers.
According to the National Rural Health Association, for farmers, the rate of suicide is 3.5 times higher than that of the general population.
The $500,000 budget is aimed to sustain the Farmer Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Program.
"According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, suicide rates have increased 46% in rural America, compared to a 27.3% increase in metro areas. And rural residents go to the emergency room 1.5 times more to be treated for self-harm incidents."
The Takeaway
Today's issue was dedicated to generosity in self-promotion.
For many people, the word "competitors" has a negative connotation.
But competition can be friendly as well. You can learn from your "competitors" and partner with them for cross-promotion.
In the end, a client will choose the therapists that fit their needs best.
