Therapist burnout: Successful vs. sustainable
Having a really full practice is not always a "good problem to have".
But realizing this can be confusing. The entire purpose of building a successful business is to fill your schedule, right?
Well, not quite. Successful and sustainable are not interchangeable concepts.
Focusing on helping as many people as possible at any cost can lead to therapist burnout, a situation that's familiar to many mental health providers.
A sustainable practice is one in which the owner can sustain themselves on emotional, financial, and professional levels.
Last week I spoke to Steve Turney, the Executive Director of the Mental Health Conference about the threat of burning out in a private practice.
If you tune in at minute 29:05 of our conversation, you'll hear my thoughts on the main cause of burnout in private practice and how you can reduce it by focusing on strategic marketing.
The big "L"
This week the US Surgeon General, Vivek Murthy, stated that the biggest culprit in today's national health crisis is loneliness.
Loneliness is shown to be linked to increased heart attacks, depression, diabetes, crime, and premature death in the US. The Surgeon General urged officials to treat loneliness with the same urgency as other serious conditions.
Additionally, he released an advisory on loneliness and the importance of human connection on the official website.
The Brandon Act
A new law called The Brandon Act is set by the Pentagon requiring providing mental health services to the troops.
After a 15-month delay, the hope for this law is to save lives lost to suicide in the military.
The law was named after Brandon Caserta, a 21 year-old sailor who took his own life in 2018 after his numerous pleas for help went unaddressed.
Mental health guidelines for cancer patients
The guideline for treating anxiety and depression in cancer patients has been revised for the first time since 2014.
The rate of anxiety and depression in cancer patients is higher than that of the general population and the experts of the American Society of Clinical Oncology addressed it by including new recommendations for the practitioners.
The Takeaway
This issue was dedicated to addressing burnout in mental health providers.
Besides the obvious solutions of self-care and rest, I believe that there's another way to address the potential threat of burnout.
Designing a practice with your lifestyle and financial needs in mind can significantly decrease future burnout and allow you to maintain a sustainable business.
